AbstractWhy have women, racial and ethnic minorities, and others had so much trouble finding a home in professional philosophy?  Based on testimonial evidence and research in the social sciences, the paper argues that the climate of philosophy, assumptions about who counts as a philosopher and what counts as philosophy are major barriers. The paper includes an overview of discouraging data (2002-2007) on the representation of women authors and articles on gender and race in seven journals in philosophy (Ethics, Journal of Philosophy, Mind, Noûs, Philosophical Review, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, Philosophy and Public Affairs).  It concludes with some recommendations.
