This paper is an examination of ranking exercises in philosophy, and their implications for marginalised groups in philosophy. More specifically, it addresses the Philosophical Gourmet Report and the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF). The paper describes the (very different) methodologies of each of these exercises, and examines opportunities for implicit biases to affect each set of rankings. It also describes the practical effects of these exercises, and the problems for underrepresented groups that may be exacerbated by them. Finally, it offers suggestions for how these exercises might be improved, although noting that serious problems would still remain.
